Great Nana Kru.
Nyenmala (Nana Kru) is one of the original "Five Towns" of the seaside Kru people, including Nana Kru, King Williams Town, Settra Kru, Little Kru, and Krogba's Town. Along with Settra Kru, Nana Kru appears on early European maps and has a long history of habitation. It was occasionally mapped as "Great Nana Kru," probably to show the large size of the town. Like Settra Kru, Nana Kru was also one of the epicenters of Klao resistance to colonization. It has also been the site of various missions, trading factories, and outposts for Americans, British, and Germans since at least the eighteenth century.
Our work in Nana Kru began in 2024, and we are starting to conduct oral history interviews and preliminary archaeological survey there. We have a special focus on the youth of Nana Kru, many of whom have been mobilized to participate in the project.
